Welcome to Rwandan Women In Action (RWIA) Website

RWIA Mission

Our Story

Rwandan Women in Action (RWIA) is comprised of several central Ohio residents. We are from Rwanda, which is in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa, and are all survivors of the 1994 genocide and its violent aftermath. We represent the Hutu and Tutsi tribes, which were the warring factions in Rwanda and Burundi, but have come together in the spirit of reconciliation to work toward improving the social, economic, and physical security for women and children in Rwanda.

Our Mission

Recognizing that the problems women and children face in the aftermath of the genocide have not been adequately addressed, RWIA strives to contribute to the holistic (re)building of Rwanda, through:

  • Social and Economic Development: through fair trade and micro-credit
  • Education: increasing levels of education for children, particularly young girls and women
  • Physical & Health security: improving physical security for women and children, including access to health care and preventing domestic violence
  • Awareness: raising awareness about life in post-genocide Rwanda using dance, film, and lectures
